The inspiration behind this delightfully whimsical and retro styled shoot all started with KMitiska Photography and Hourglass Productions wanting to harness the beauty of the great outdoors in Colorado! For many, camping is the heart and soul of summers in Colorado, and they wanted to create a shoot that would evoke nostalgia for childhood days spent at summer camp!
A whimsical and retro summer camp styled shoot in Boulder, CO
We ventured to local thrift shops as well as our own closets for the models' non-formal wardrobes (with the exception of the Bride) for “A Wet Hot American Summer” inspired apparel for the “night before party” part of the shoot, which we especially think is a unique twist on the camping aspect.
If this wedding were to happen here, we absolutely believe the rehearsal and/or night before the wedding would gleefully happen as everyone prepares for the wedding in nature for the day to follow, and it's no mistake that the wedding party is enjoying some of our favorite Colorado microbrews. The table, benches and games were also hand crafted in Colorado by 40 North Designs. The signage and paperie from Sweet Zion Paperie is full of delightful details, such as the field guide to the wedding weekend.
We asked the florist to create something whimsical and colorful that would stand out among the greenery of the venue, and they added their own twist by putting the bridesmaid bouquets in the lanterns for the ladies to carry. The venue was a crucial part of our shoot, and we hit the jackpot with Kelly Urban Farm, an awesome boutique venue in Boulder with a treehouse! We chose a Denver baker, The Long I Pie Shop, to provide her decadent pies as the wedding dessert in lieu of a cake to go along with the rustic theme of the shoot.
Overall, we really wanted a nostalgic shoot in nature that would make any outdoorsy couple daydream about their summer camp wedding in Colorado, or wherever they might live! – Kimberly, KMitiska Photography
