The Bride’s Guide to Wedding-Day Footwear

Many brides spend years dreaming about what they’ll look like on their wedding day. They fantasize about the type of dress they’ll wear—if the gown will have lace or beading or if they’ll wear a long veil.

What most brides don’t think about is what type of shoes they’re going to wear underneath their dress, but it’s equally important! From classic pumps to kitty heels to flats—there are so many options for your big day. We have the top tips and tricks to finding the perfect shoes that will sweep you off your feet.

Tip 1: Consider Your Budget

Consider Your Wedding Shoe Budget

According to a national average, brides will spend around $1600 on their wedding dress. Because of this, many brides try to stay under $200 for their bridal shoes. Inexpensive bridal shoes range $25 to $75, and moderate shoes cost $100 to $250.

Brides should also decide whether it’s worth spending a lot of money on shoes that their guests may never see. If it’s not worth spending the money, borrow a pair of shoes or wear your favorite pair that you already own.

If you’re leaning towards the moderate-priced shoes, check out Nordstrom or Zappos. They sell designer shoes at a cheaper price!

Bonus tip: Find something you’ll wear again so you get your money’s worth. Embellished pumps go great with jeans and will hit just above the ankle. Or go for a pointed-toe flat—they’ll elongate your legs. Flats also work well for your bridal shower, bachelorette weekend or rehearsal dinner.

Tip 2: Look To Your Wedding Dress For Inspiration

Match Your Wedding Shoes to Your Dress

The style of your dress can help determine the type of shoes you should wear on your big day. Wearing a short dress is the perfect opportunity to show off some statement shoes like retro pointy-toe pumps or heels with a cool print or color. For an a-line or ball gown, match your shoes to the details on your gown like lace, jewels or beading. For a mermaid-style dress, consider strappy heels or sexy peep-toe shoes.

Bonus tip: Consider the fabric of your dress. For a long lace dress, you’ll want to avoid studs or jewels that can rip the ultra-delicate fabric.

Tip 3: Remember The Venue & Season You’re Getting Married

This may seem like a no-brainer, but you’re probably not going to wear heels to your beach wedding or sneakers in the catholic church. For black-tie weddings, classic white pumps or sling backs with fine satin, pearls or crystals are fine choices. Having a winter wedding? Velvet pumps or lace booties are perfect picks! Look for easy, breezy fabrics like raffia or woven linen for a summer wedding on the beach or outdoor garden. If you still want to wear heels, look for sandals or wedges with a sturdy block heel.

Tip 4: Decide What Level Of Comfort You Want

You’re going to spend a lot of time on your feet on your wedding day, so determine how comfortable you are standing in heels through the ceremony, pictures and reception. Many podiatrists say here’s exactly what to look for if you want to stay comfortable:

  • Cushioning or padding under the ball and arch of the foot
  • A thick, low heel or wedge gives the most support and low stress on your feet
  • Rubber soles keep you from slipping on the dance floor
  • Flexible fabrics so your toes aren’t squished

Tip 5: Stay True To Your Style

This is a chance to add your own personalized twist on your wedding day, even if you and the photographer are the only ones who see them. (It is a day all about you, of course.)

If you’re not a stilettos girl, don’t feel like you have to become one because your husband’s a foot (or more) taller than you. If you’re having a rustic farm wedding put on your favorite cowgirl boots, even if they’re a little worn.

For example: I wore open-toe kitty heel sandals with my lace gown for my outdoor spring wedding, but the second the ceremony was over I switched into my glitter pink Toms. Rock out to your own unique style!

Other things to consider:

  • When you find the perfect shoes, take them to your dress fittings to make sure the hemline will be the right length. If you’re switching to another pair for the reception, be sure to bring that pair as well.
  • Don’t buy shoes that aren’t comfortable at the store. They won’t get more comfortable, no matter how much you try to break them in.
  • Break in your shoes long before the big day. Wear socks to slightly stretch them out if they seem tight.
  • Scuff the bottom of the soles with sandpaper to provide more traction, in case your new shoes are slippery.
  • If you’re buying your shoes online, read the product description carefully and check the reviews for any warning signs.
